Other than some small aircraft serving various airports in Hawaii, Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines had seen little competition for many years, .

In 1981, Mid Pacific Air entered the market  with a 64 seat

NAMC YS-11 aircraft. The following seven years were difficult financially and the last flight was flown in 1988.

Mid-Pacific Air introduced jets with the addition of the Focker

F-28 400 in 1985. 2 jet aircraft arrived in July of that year with hopes for more but both were sold in 1987.

Mid Pac held the facility at 218 Lagoon Drive for just a few years before it went back to the DOT-Airports.

After the closing of Mid Pacific Air, the aircraft found new homes. But not all homes required airworthiness. 2 aircraft found a new role as an artificial reef.
